As explained in the last issue of Freight Rate Indicators, it is no longer possible for CI to report freight rate changes as before due to some ocean carriers preferring instead to give their freight rates to their new trade association run by the European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA). Unfortunately the trade association has yet to publish anything concrete. To help bridge the gap until something is produced, the following is an analysis of the few remaining carriers that still submitted their all-in rates to CI in Q4 2008. The shocker was the 23 decline in the average rate from Asia to Europe compared to the same period of last year. This will be discussed in more detail later on, but it should be made clear that the decline was a lot less than what was reported in other publications, where rates as low as USD100/TEU were cited.
