Umbilical cord blood has been introduced as an alternative graft source for allogeneic hematopoietic SCT in both pediatric and adult patients. However, the limited number of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) leads to delayed engraftment, especially in adult recipients. Therefore, several groups are working on an optimized collection procedure in order to increase the number of transplantable progenitors. Bornstein et al? have demonstrated recently that a modified in uterojex utero two-step collection procedure can lead to a significant increase in the number of harvested progenitor cells.
