A shortcoming of the ray theory for the estimation of hydroelastic behavior of a very large floating structure (VLFS) is that the wave amplitude is suddenly changed along a ray that passes through a corner. The parabolic approximation is applied to overcome this difficulty as a smoothing function. It was found that the hydroelastic behavior of a VLFS is represented with a simple equation by applying the parabolic approximation. The approximation changes from the anti-symmetric solution to the symmetric solution as the wave direction approaches to zero. The inner solution dos not include the effect of incident angle. Therefore, the approximation seems not good when mu_0 is negative, although the anti-symmetric solution itself is not a bad approximation. Except for this point, the present approximation tells the nature of hydroelastic motion of a VLFS with reasonable accuracy.
