The president is the commander in chief and supreme commander of the armed forces and appoints the prime minister, the chairman of the joint chiefs, and the three service chiefs. The prime minister, who has effective control over the military, holds the defense minister's post. The Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee is in charge of integrating and coordinating the three branches of government. The three service chiefs are directly subordinate to the defense minister. The chief of army staff is traditionally the most senior officer in the armed forces, with wide-ranging power.
