Metabolic surgery may be more effective

The LOADD study did not consider a more effective form of nutritional intervention-metabolic (bariatric) surgery-which is a proved treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes. In a study of people with type 2 diabetes randomised to laparoscopic gastric banding or best medical treatment, banding was associated with greater total weight loss (mean 20.7% v 1.7%), greater reduction in glycated haemoglobin (HBA_(1c); mean 1.8% v 0.38%), and significantly increased remission of type 2 diabetes (73%> v 13%).
