In the April 24 Digest, the Week in Focus pointed out separate crude quality disputes between oil seller BP and its buyers Delta Airline's Monroe Energy in Trainer, PA (US) and North Atlantic Refining in Newfoundland, NS (Canada). The disputes are often related to various issues such as API, corrosion, fouling, cuts, and so on as refiners are becoming increasingly critical of blending practices. For instance, so-called 'dumbbell crudes' are created by blending a very light oil with a heavier grade. The resultant blend may have an API gravity mat meets contract specifications, but it lacks the middle-of-the-barrel-range hydrocarbons mat refiners expect.
