According to the US State Department, the Venezuelan government is showcasing "increasing authoritarianism" and some US lawmakers-as well as foreign leaders—are said to be pushing the Trump administration to impose sanctions. US refiners, however, are not keen. "While placing sanctions on oil imports from Venezuela would not deny a market for this internationally traded commodity, it would likely hurt consumers and businesses right here in the United States," wrote American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers CEO Chet Thompson in a letter addressed to the president.
