Hurricane Michael: Damage Patterns and Trends

Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, FL on October 10, 2019, as a Category 5 storm with sustained wind speeds in excess of 150 mph. The storm was the most powerful hurricane to impact the Florida Panhandle and the fourth most powerful hurricane to impact the United States. Hurricane Michael caused widespread damage throughout the Panama City region and nearly complete destruction to parts of Mexico Beach. Wind speeds in a large portion of the region were at or above the design level event. Observed damage was typically proportional to wind speeds, however, it was observed that in some areas, structures experienced differential damage with some performing well and others with significant damage.
