US ferrous scrap exports surge in Aug

Ferrous scrap exports from the United States rebounded by 50.9% month on month in August after Turkey and Bangladesh returned to the deep-sea market. US exports of ferrous scrap totaled 1.87 million tonnes in August compared with 1.24 million tonnes in July and 1.41 million tonnes in June. The sharp rise was driven by a 74% upswing in shipments to Turkey, the top buyer of US ferrous scrap, to 654,710 tonnes from 376,253 tonnes in July due to mills in the country rushing to replenish diminished inventories after the Covid-19-related economic shutdown.
