India: Scientists develop lightweight battery

SCIENTISTS from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore and Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI) in Karaikudi, southern India, have jointly developed a light-weight car battery that replaces lead with plastic. While conventional lead-acid car batteries use metallic lead or lead alloys and weigh about 20kg, the new battery weighs only about 12kg, but delivers the same output as the conventional type. The scientists believe that these storage batteries will be beneficial to electric cars of the future, and have filed a patent in the US.
