Effects of dietary oil source were upon the growth of Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) and the fatty acid composition of Murray cod fillets were investigated. Cod liver oil, canola oil and linseed oil were used individually and in combination. Daily feed intake, specific growth rate and final mean wt. were greater in fish fed cod liver oil with or without linseed oil than in fish fed linseed oil alone, but feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios did not differ markedly among groups. Fillets from fish fed cod liver oil alone as a lipid source showed the highest levels of eicosapentaenoic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, while those from fish fed canola oil alone contained the highest concn. of oleic acid. Feeding linseed oil as the only source of dietary lipid resulted in a high fillet level of alpha-linolenic acid.
