摘要

Sir Robert McAlpine has been fined £200,000 after a worker was killed in a fall from a glass canopy on a Debenhams storefront in Exeter. The construction firm's glazing contractor, London Fenestration Trades (LFT), was also fined £200,000 but, because it is in liquidation and has no assets, it had to pay £10 only. Philip Evans, a LFT employee, died on 10 November 2011 after he was injured the previous day during snagging work to repair a glass curtain wall above an entrance to the department store, which was part of a new shopping development. Sir Robert McAlpine, the principal contractor for the development, retained a presence on site during the snagging process and had borrowed a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), which belonged to the shopping centre management, for LFT to use during the repair.
