Family nurse partnership and health inequalities.

We read in the April edition of the journal Maggie Fisher's remarks about her concerns about the Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) in England and Scotland, and do not agree that FNP contributes to health inequalities - instead, it is part of the package of proportionate universalism.1 Some families in the UK need a greater share of the service to get some of the same outcomes for their health.We believe that we are contributing to the Healthy Child programme and that our role falls within the progressive services offered to those with additional risks and needs.Teenage parents have a 60% higher risk of infant mortality, increased risks of a low birthweight, are three times more likely to suffer with postnatal depression, and have a higher risk of living in poverty.3 This is why this vulnerable client group needs a different service to help meet their and their children's needs.FNP has a strong evidence base and the young people we are working with like this service and want their friends to have a family nurse. This is a powerful message, and as a powerful union we should be listening to the views of these young people and representing their views.
