Fly fishing Heaven Christmas Island

Mention Christmas Island to a hundred Anssies and chances are ninetynine of diem will immediately conjure up images of wretched South-East Asian 'boat people' in a sterile detention centre backdrop. Happily, there is another Christmas Island the realChristmas Island — and it's here that I spent eight wonderful days in early August of 2010. Christmas is part of the Kiritimati group, situated between Fiji and Hawaii, about two degrees north of the Equator. It has long been recognised as the best bonefish ground on the planet, attracting thousands of fly fishers annually. Most come from North America, but a few lucky Aussies have joined the ranks in recent years, and I travelled there for the first time back in 2006. Christmas Island isn't much morethan a sizeable coral atoll with a relatively small population.
