Powering a new faith in cod: a storn from Norway

Any traveller on the road to the Akvaforsk research station at Litdalen in Northern Norway, will notice the confluence of two rivers just outside the security fence, a few kilometers before they folw into the North Sea. Power lines criss-cross the flat valley suggesting cheap power from the neighbouring utility. What you flowing, subterranean channel that pumps icy mountain water beneath the station and into its hatchery- and brood fish tanks. A number of natural advantages come together at Akfaforsk -- by design. Not least are the fish. Above the offshore oil and gas fields, stocks of arctic cod, coastal cod and North Sea cod congregate in their only migratory overlap. Yet, proximity the Europe's best cod-spawning area is not what brought Akvaforsk here in 1971. It was salmon and trout, a secret of nineteenth century farmers who reared them in water-filled ditches. A Sctsman, who built the nearby hotel 100 years ago, had tried telling the world of this bounty.
