Chilean hatchery first out of the gate with toothfish

It's still early days for the would-be aquaculture species, but fingerlings and early juveniles of the Patagonian toothfish, often marketed as Chilean sea bass, are now swimming in tanks at a hatchery near Puerto Montt, Chile, spawned from wild broodstock last year. Ateam of scientists and technicians at Chile's Education Corporation La Araucana achieved first spawning of Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus ekginoides) last November and hope to establish technology and protocols to develop an aquaculture fishery for the species.
