Cerebral infarction in older age; Nature or (lack of) nurture?

Adverse experiences in childhood are pervasive, with a large population-based study reporting at least 1 adverse experience, such as parental divorce, maternal or paternal depression/anxiety, or sexual abuse, in 73% of respondents. Further, half of the respondents reported 2 or more adversities, highlighting the tendency for these exposures to cluster. Observational studies have found that experiences and exposures early in life are associated with development of psychiatric and medical conditions in adulthood. To date, the clinical importance and causal pathways to explain relationships between childhood adverse events and development of nonpsychiatric disease later in life remain uncertain.
