5G Onboard - A Bet on the Future

The era of 5G vehicle connectivity has not yet arrived. Only one in five mobile connections, globally, will be running on a 5G network by 2025, says the mobile operators’ industry advocacy group GSMA. And yet, at least five carmakers have already started equipping new vehicles with 5G modems, according to IHS Markit. Four of those carmakers are Chinese and their new vehicles are destined for their domestic market. The other vehicle is the BMW iX, an electric SUV. It is the world’s first 5G-equipped vehicle from a premium carmaker, according to BMW. The vehicle will launch in Europe in November 2021. The USA and other markets will get the vehicle in early 2022. By 2023, IHS Markit expects that 75 production brands will offer 5G-capable vehicles, up from just three in 2020.
