The automotive industry is increasingly concerned with the topic of virtualization, for example in the development of digital cockpits and driver assistance systems. Embedded hypervisors, available for some time now, have become established as state-of-the-art technology. They are designed in such a way that development companies can remain competitive on the market even in times of ever shorter product development cycles and manufacturing phases. BlackBerry highlights five ways in which virtualization is keeping manufacturers’ embedded technology ahead of the competition in the industry. Functional safety is also becoming increasingly important ?in embedded hardware. From this point of view, RISC V processor cores can offer advantages for the development of automotive systems such as lidar, radar or automotive gateways. This is because they give embedded designers the choice of using the open RISC architecture instead of a proprietary commercial processor architecture. In the interview, IPG Managing Director Steffen Schmidt discusses the question of whether (hardware) redundancy as a classic method of ensuring safety still applies in the age of the softwaredefined vehicle.
