In our previous studies, we developed near-infrared (NIR) calibration models for quality assessment of barley as a source of fuel ethanol production. Both the dispersive system and Fourier transform (FT) system showed potential for rapid analysis of barley quality. The level of precision of the model developed for each component was sufficient to be used for a rapid screening or classification of barley. For ground barley, there was no apparent advantage of using a higher resolution FT-NIR system over a lower resolution dispersive NIR system for prediction of most of the components. For kernel barley, the FT-NIR system gave better results than the dispersive system for starch and beta-glucan analysis.
