WARATAH (wo-ra-TAH) is an Australian aboriginal word that has become the universal common name for the evergreen shrubs that botanists call Telopea; a name meaning 'seen from afar', that refers to the striking red flowers. An aboriginal legend relates the war atah to a plant that grew up in the rock cleft where a young woman had willed herself to die after her beloved failed to return from a fight against another tribe.
