Hybrids between Dicbroa Hydramgea

Plants grown as Dichroa versicolor are revealed to be ahybrid with Hydrangea, and deliberate crosses between the same genera are yielding new plants for gardens.Julian Shaw investigates.HYDRANGEA is one ofthe most popular garden shrubs. This fact has ledto much selection work focusing on flower colour and inflorescence size and structure. More enterprising breeders have been working on crossing Hydrangea with the related Dichroa to introduce further desirable traits. Such traits include neat or compacthabit, evergreen or coloured foliage, perpetual blooming, stability of flower colour independent of aluminium concentration in the soil, and bright blue shiny berries instead of dull seed heads of capsules.
