A nurseryman and garden designer, James Russell's lasting legacy is his landscaping and planting design of the arboretum at Castle Howard, now the Yorkshire Arboretum. John Grimshaw outlines his life.James Philip Cuming Russell, known as Jim to his friends, was both one of the greatest plantsmen of the 20thcentury and an influential and innovative garden designer. Yet his name is strangely unfamiliar. He has no entry in the Oxford Dictionary ofNational Biography and in horticultural literature his name most often appears as an appendage to that of his sometime employee, Graham Stuart Thomas. He was innately modest, published little, and much of his work was undertaken as a gentleman among gentlemen - wherediscretion was taken for granted.
