It is interesting how the study of plant distributions can provide support to theories of geological land mass movements. The Podocarpaceae, a family of coniferous shrubs and trees, is a classic example of the flora of Gondwanaland - the giant supercontinent that split at the end of the Jurassic. Other notable families originating on that continent are the Proteaceae and Arancariaceae. When parts of this huge landmass moved apart with continental drift to form new continents in the southern hemisphere, the plants moved with them, evolving into new genera and species.
