Riesling: Has the 'White Revolution' Finally Arrived? Part One: Production and Style in the U.S.

There's lots of talk these days about riesling finally experiencing a popular revival. Freddy Price, a former UK wine trade member has even published a book called "Riesling Renaissance" (Mitchell Beazley, 2004), but is this renaissance more than talk, and how can it be quantified? We'll start our inquiry on the riesling trend in California. A good empirical place to examine varietal trends is in vineyard acreage, especially the ratio of bearing to non-bearing grapes. Mature varietal categories may have many times the total acreage of newly fashionable ones, but a significant ratio of non-bearing to bearing acreage demonstrates strong growth in the category and confidence in demand.
