Karyotypes of three South East Pacific flounder species of the family Paralichthyidae.

The present study describes the average karyotype of two flounder species, Paralichthys adspersus and P. microps, and the big eye flounder Hippoglossina macrops. Ten individuals of P. adspersus, one of P. microps and five of H. macrops from Coquimbo bay in the South East Pacific coast were studied. The two Paralichthys showed a modal class for the diploid complement of 2n=46 (range of 44-49) chromosomes. H. macrops showed a modal number of 2n=48 (range of 46-50) chromosomes. In the two former species, the chromosome complement included one large metacentric chromosome (pair 1) and 22 pairs of telocentric chromosomes showing only a slight range in size. Only telocentric chromosomes were observed in H. macrops. All three species showed an arm number (AN)=48. Neither heteromorphic chromosome pairs nor secondary constrictions or other conspicuous aspects in the karyotypes were observed for any of the species.
