Professionalising health promotion?

In June 2011, Susan Jackson, Editor-in-Chief of Global Health Promotion, published a short but very profound analysis of the achievements and challenges involved in the incorporation of health promotion (HP) into the programmes and disciplines of public health over the past 25 years. In her article, the author made the point that, for a long time, health promoters have been debating whether they should identify themselves as an independent profession, or should focus on ensuring that HP is incorporated into the work of different fields of knowledge (1). Dare I come out and say it? Have we had this debate in the South American subcontinent yet? In my view, the debate has only just begun.
