EU countries greenlight authorization of Fair Insects’ locust range as novel food

EU member states have cleared a European Commission proposal to authorise frozen, dried and powder forms of Locusta migratoria (migratory locust) as a novel food for Dutch producer Fair Insects (a Protix company). Fair Insects will enjoy five years proprietary protection under the 2015 novel foods regulation (2283/2015) for its migratory locust products, which are to be authorised for use in a wide range of foods including processed potato and pasta-based products, soups, alcoholic drinks and confectionery.
