EU/RUSSIA/UKRAINE: Political ties unaffected by gas crisis, say ministers

The political relations between the EU and its two neighbours - Russia and Ukraine - will not be affected by the recent gas crisis, which left the majority of member states without gas supply in the middle of a harsh winter. The EU's foreign ministers, meeting on 26 January in Brussels, expressed the Union's full commitment to continue without any disruption the ongoing negotiations on new enhanced agreements with both countries. "Negotiations with Russia and Ukraine remain our key priority," said Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, dismissing speculations that the EU might want to toughen its stance on both countries following the gas crisis.
