Congestion and the charge

Int was Durham which introduced the UK's first congestion charge in 2002 but London followed closely on its heels in 2003 with one of the world's largest and most ambitious plans to tackle urban congestion. For the last 10 years the system has been run by Siemens, which has processed some two billion vehicle detection records over this time. The Congestion Charge is a ￡11.50 daily charge - up from the initial ￡5 - for driving a vehicle within the charging zone between 07:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday. It covers a large area extending from Kings Cross in the North to Elephant and Castle in the South, Hyde Park Corner in the West and Old Street to the East.
