Off the production line: A model for a better future?

By the time you read this, the Government bodies, lobbyists, campaigners and climate change advisors may already have met in Glasgow for COP26 and will have packed their bags, to return home or to head off to the next major calendar date in the world's diary for seeking to limit temperature change to 'just' 1.5 degrees celsius during our children's lifetime. What the communiques coming out of the event say is obviously going to be important. Words can drive policies and policies can drive change. The UK Government has already intervened in parts of the economy with a view to achieving challenging net zero 2035 targets - consider, for example, the support given to facilitate growth in the UK's offshore wind industry -and some attention has already been given to the construction industry, whether through the way in which projects are procured or the way in which bidder shortlists might be drawn up. The Construction Playbook, (as endorsed in the recent CBI publication New Foundations) as well as the most recent procurement notices for public sector tenders are good examples of this.
