Application of ionic liquids to double-layer capacitors

Ionic liquids have received much attention for the application to double-layer capacitors, which are considered to be an energy storage device for hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. Among ionic liquids, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (EMI) salts with fluorine-containing anions can be used as an electrolyte for double-layer capacitors. After physicochemical properties of these ionic liquids such as electrolytic conductivity, electrochemical window, and double-layer capacitance are explained, the practical performances of carbon double-layer capacitors using these ionic liquids are outlined.
