When you consider that around 500 billion vehicle kilometres are travelled every year on Great Britain's roads, it is of no surprise that such heavy volumes of traffic are having a negative effect on the condition of road surfaces.The continually increasing number of vehicles across the road network that stretches 380,000 kilometres (source: DfT Road Traffic Statistics 2005) not only impacts road condition, but also contributes towards a rise in noise levels, Repairing and replacing the surfaces of our roads is an ongoing task as the surfaces have a limited service life and naturally will not last forever. To cope with the destructive effects of increasing volumes of traffic many resurfacing schemes are underway or planned along the road network, some of which may form part of routine maintenance programmes and others that have been initiated for reasons such as poor safety levels and noise pollution concerns.
