摘要

I am writing this a day or two after the tumultuous by-election in Crewe toward the end of last month. As a life long member of the Labour party and one of its peers, I am reluctant to dwell on it for its results brings some anxiety for the future well-being of some of my colleagues in the Commons. How bad a day for the party was it? Pretty dismal, I would say. This has been a non -partisan column, I hope, but since it deals with Westminster matters in general, I think it not unreasonable to muse gently on electoral prospects from time to time. For the moment, Mr. Cameron must be happy and perhaps saying to himself as the late Willie Whitelaw once did, "I know I mustn't crow, but I'm crowing like hell".
