Train ride is a civil engineer's paradise

By the time this column is read, we shall have seen the Queen's speech for the last session of the current Parliament and we shall know just what is in store for us in the coming year. That is unless the applecart is upset by unexpected events such as those of two years ago when the capitalist system suffered a severe nervous breakdown to the alarm and dismay of all concerned. As a onetime Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, once said: "We shall have to wait and see". In September, during the summer recess, I wrote about tramways, especially those in Lisbon. Following a somewhat similar line of inquiry, I spent the latter part of October on a ten-day visit to southern Switzerland to look at the civil engineering aspects of the railway system there.
