Start on first accelerated road scheme

Balfour Beatty has been given the go-ahead to start work on the first road scheme brought forward under the Government's ￡3bn economic stimulus package, unveiled last November at the height of the credit crunch. Balfour has got the green light on the ￡4OOm A46 scheme to dual a 17-mile stretch of single carriageway road between Newark and Widmerpool which will create 500 construction jobs. So far it is the only major project to emerge from the Government's stimulus package.
