Shippers face increased fuel surcharges

SHIPPERS face yet more pain in the form of increasing bunker surcharges as the price of marine fuel rises and the spread between low- and high-sulphur fuels increases. Bunker prices, which collapsed at the beginning of the pandemic, have seen steady increases in recent months as economic activity has pushed up oil prices. Current bunker fuel prices are now back to the levels last seen in 2018 at over $500 per tonne. At the same time, the price of very low sulphur fuel oil, which spiked with the introduction of IMO2020 rules just as the pandemic began, has again risen back to record highs, reaching $689 per tonne last week.
