INRIX - formerly ITIS Holdings before their 2012 acquisition by the US group - have a long history in innovation in traffic data. For some time they have been using mobile phone data from "off call" sources - i.e. the data the phone transmits when not actually making a call, to keep in touch with cell towers. This follows the UK government decision to not procure data captured while phoning and driving. INRIX has been using data from one of the largest mobile service providers in the UK to develop journey times for vehicles on UK roads, at a "macroscopic level" to look at journey times between cities and towns rather than emulate say a loop. The advantage of this over the complimentary but more microscopic GPS speed data they also collect is the sheer volume of data - typically they can track 25-30 per cent of all phones moving in a network.
