Funding the road ahead - the next generation

The National Infrastructure Commission's latest alliterative publication Congestion, Capacity and Carbon: Priorities For National Infrastructure sets out with admirable clarity some of the challenges and potential revolutions facing the highways sector. Against a Herculean task of reviewing all aspects of UK infrastructure, it asks some fairly hard questions, as part of a nationwide consultation process, including: 1. What changes to the design and use of the road would be needed to maximise the opportunities from connected and autonomous vehicles [...and...] how should it be established which changes are socially acceptable and how could they be brought about? 2. What Government policies are needed to support the take-up of electric vehicles? What is the role of Government in ensuring a rapid roll-out of charging infrastructure? What is the most cost-effective way of ensuring the electricity distribution network can cope?
