More bad news for US juice sales as grapefruit decline steepens

THE Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC), in its latest report on US retail orange juice sales, is claiming again that US retail orange juice demand is up (for the fifth consecutive period), but this is simply not true. As before, retail sales value isup but volumes, the only coherent way to measure demand, are still down. For the four-week period ending 11 June, volume sales were 7.2% down from the same period in 2010 at 39.29 million gallons (42.34 million gallons). Revenues were indeed up by 0.3%, but as before, this was only because of an 8.1% overall increase in the price of orange juice to an average of USD6.07 per gallon (USD5.61/gallon).
