Italian UAVs

After over a decade of delay, the Kosovo air campaign in the late 1990s finally convinced the Italian armed forces of the need for UAV systems, and eight systems each of the Mirach 26 and Mirach 150 were ordered in January 2000 with deliveries concluding in 2002. In addition, Italy has acquired RQ-1 Predators and RQ-9 Reapers for the air force. The Italian army selected the AAI RQ-7 Shadow for its immediate requirements. Italy has experimented with the Sky-X UCAV concept air vehicle for future requirements. Selex-Galileo is developing a number of new UAV designs running the gamut from tactical UAVs such as Falco through HALE UAVs such as Molynx. Italy recently exported the Selex Falco to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Turkmenistan and has been marketing it extensively in the Mid-East and North Africa with sales of about 50 air vehicles.
