German GHG emissions fall

Germany's greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) declined by 2.9pc on the year in 2011, the environment ministry says. Emissions fell by 27mn t CO2 equivalent (CO2e) to 917mn t CO2e, according to final data submitted to the European Commission and released by German federal environment office UBA (see table). Emissions decreased mainly in the household heating sector, which is outside the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS), reflecting a drop in fossil fuels used for heating because of milder weather. The fall in emissions came despite the shut- down of eight nuclear reactors in spring 2011.
