INTRODUCTION AND CONTENT

This quarterly report on primary aluminium provides information of three types: short-term capacity, production and stock developments; price and cost trends; and medium-term prospects for capacity. A companion report covers capacity and market information for alumina and bauxite. This report is based on information available up to 31 August 2005 and includes IAI - International Aluminium Institute data on production and stocks up to July 2005 The reports are timed to include IAI's quarterly information on both primary aluminium and alumina and therefore appear shortly after 26 February, May, August and November of each year. Table 1 shows our estimates and forecasts for the balance of demand and supply for primary aluminium for each year until 2008. Table 2 shows monthly information for primary aluminium production, stocks and consumption. These monthly statistics are consistent with the annual totals in Table 1. Table 3 shows annual forecasts to 2008 of consumption by country, on which the total consumption in Table 1 is based.
