Rolls-Royce moves closer to all-electric aircraft launch

British aero-engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and its partners have moved a step closer in the development and testing of technology, including a lithium-ion based battery pack, that will power its first all-electric aircraft. All the technology has been tested on a full-scale replica of the aircraft’s core, called an ionBird, including a 500 horsepower electric powertrain and a battery with more than 6,000 cells packaged for maximum safety, minimum weight and full thermal protection, Rolls Royce said today.
