Effect of integrated nitrogen management on quality of aromatic rice.

Experiments were conducted during 2001 and 2002, in New Delhi, India, to evaluate the effects of FYM (farmyard manure), VC (vermicompost) and BGA [? blue green algae] in combination with N as PU [? prilled urea] on the quality of aromatic rice. The treatments consisted of two aromatic rice cultivars (Basmati-370 and Pusa Sugandh-3) and nine nitrogen management treatments (control; 60 PU; 120 PU; 80 PU + 40 FYM; 60 PU + 60 FYM; 80 PU + 40 VC; 60 PU + 60 VC; 80 PU + 20 FYM + BGA; and 60 PU + 40 FYM + BGA). Both cultivars recorded non-significant variation in mulching, hulling and kernel breadth before cooking during 2001 and protein content during 2002. Significant increases in the values of head rice recovery, kernel length and breadth before and after cooking, and protein content during 2002 were noticed in Pusa Sugandh-3. Basmati-370 appeared highly aromatic compared with Pusa Sugandh-3. Application of N either through PU or through integrated management approach did significantly influence on the quality of rice. N levels and integrated management also did not influence most of the quality parameters. However, N application significantly increased protein content during the second year of the study..
