Physiological and qualitative responses of improved sugarcane varieties under plant cane in Konkan region of Maharashtra.

A field experiment was conducted in Wakawali, Maharashtra, India, during 1991-92 and 1992-93 to investigate the physiological and qualitative responses of 17 promising sugarcane cultivars, i.e. Com 88121, Co 8011, Co 88016, Co 88017, Co 88002, Co 88011, Co 88024, Co 88025, Co 88027, Co 88028, Co 88029, Co 88030, Co 88031, Co 88032, Co 88033, Co 7219 and Co 7527. Two years polled results revealed that Co 8011 produced significantly higher cane yield (93.69 t/ha) and commercial cane sugar (9.58 t/ha) than the rest of the cultivars, except for Co 7527, Co 88011 which were at par with Co 8011. The high cane yield recorded by Co 7527, Co 88011 and Co 8011 was mainly due to high girth and weight/cane. High cane yield coupled with high purity and sucrose percentage resulted into the maximum sugar yield in Co 8011. Co 7527 and Co 88011 also performed better and found equally good with Co 8011.
