High production of sugarcane depends on planting high yielding variety and quality seed cane. Time gap between seed cane cutting to planting is a major constraint to enhancing sugarcane yield at Finchaa Sugar Estate. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted with the objectives of evaluating the effect of time gap between seed cane cutting to planting of sugarcane on the quality parameters of seed cane and its influence on growth and cane yield of sugarcane. The study was conducted in 2018-2019 cropping season at Finchaa sugar Estate. The treatments consisted of eight durations of time gap between seed cane cutting to planting (fresh (0), 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 h stale seed cane) and two sugarcane varieties namely (N14 and D42/58) using randomized complete block design in a factorial arrangement with three replications. Time gap between seed cane cutting to planting significantly affect sprout %, number of tillers and number of millable cane. However, cane height, cane weight and node length had significantly influenced by sugarcane variety. Main factors and their interaction had a non-significant effect on cane girth, number of nodes, leaf area index and specific leaf weight. The maximum value of seed cane yield and sugar yield recorded from fresh seed cane. Higher value of sprout % (75.5), tiller population (10.09 x 10 per hectare) and number of millable cane 4 (14.88 x 10 per hectare) recorded from seed cane stale for 24 h before planting. Planting N14 sugarcane variety 4 resulted in significantly higher internode length (12.32 cm), stalk height (206 cm), cane weight (1.49 kg), cane yield (1.84x10 t/ha) and sugar yield (20.921 t/ha). Planting of seed cane which did not stale more than 24 h is 2 more beneficial to get high number of sprout, tiller count and high number of millable cane, cane yield and sugar yield. N14 sugarcane variety was high yielder than D42/58 sugarcane variety. Thus, planting seed cane of N14 sugarcane variety which could not stale (time gap between seed cane cutting to planting) more than 24 h is recommended to get high yield at Finchaa sugar Estate.
