Burnout is described by Maslach as a syndrome composed of emotional exhaustion, depersonaliza-tion, and decreased levels of personal accomplishment. Physicians have higher levels of burnout than the general public. 2Burnout seems to affect physicians from the beginning of their training. Approximately half of residents experience high emotional exhaustion and a third of residents experience elevated levels of deper-sonalization. 3In a 2017 study, suicide was the second leading cause of death among all medical residents and the number one leading cause of death for male residents. 4A 2017 review listed workload, relationship with colleagues and patients, lack of rewards, insufficient resources, and conflict between work and family as sources of stress. 5Physical stressors that providers face include sleep deprivation, 6working night shifts, working serial shifts, ' and complex communication processes.
