Acute abdomen caused by huge pedunculated uterine leiomyoma in torsion

Uterine leiomyomata are the most common gynaecologic tumours. Twenty-five per cent of all women have fibroids by age 50.1 They are often discovered as an incidental finding on ultrasound and urgent surgeiy is rarely needed.2 However, uterine leiomyoma in torsion is an uncommon but serious emergency that usually mimics localized peritonitis. It is rarely diagnosed preoperatively and if not operated, it can lead to necrosis and sepsis. As to our knowledge, there are only 10 cases of torsion of a uterine leiomyoma reported in the literature.3'4 We report a further case, in an elderly woman, who is one of the oldest patients reported with this condition.
