The institute of medicine report on the future of nursing: A transformational blueprint

Transformational change occurs at the nexus of when a great need exists, and there is a compelling desire to respond to new innovations or to innovate and lead change. Transformational change in practice vastly differs from the more common incremental, improvement-oriented change. It is the rare occurrence when practice is uprooted, revalued, and reconceptualized so that we work differently, care for patients differently, and reorient our knowledge and what we hold to be true. Experienced perioperative nurses know of transformational shifts, such as advances in anesthesia and laser technology. Combined, these led to ambulatory surgery, an expanded range of procedures available to patients (eg, laser surgeries), shorter hospital stays, and new competency expectations for nurses.
